Do I need a visa to travel to the UAE?

People from different nationalities have to satisfy different criteria to get a valid visa to enter United Arab Emirates (UAE). Read on to know all about getting a UAE visa while travelling to any of the Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah)

Visa requirement for US citizens

American citizens who have regular passports do not need to have a visa to visit the UAE. However, please make sure you fulfil following criteria’s:
  1. Original passport signed by the bearer, should not expire within six (6) months from the expected time of arrival in the UAE.
  2. Confirmed round-trip airline ticket or airline ticket to other destination(s).
The visas are available upon arrival at the UAE airports and the American citizens can stay for 1 month in the UAE. However, if you are going to stay longer, you have to contact the immigration officer at the airport or the local immigration office in the UAE and apply for the same.

Visa requirement for Non-US citizens

It is mandatory that your original passport (not a travel document), should not get expired within 6 months from the expected date of arrival in the UAE.

    Andorra, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Brunei, Canada, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Kuwait, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Slovakia, Slovenia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and Northern Ireland (Except the British overseas citizens), Vatican.
    Upon your arrival to UAE airports, the visas will be granted to you. This also includes those who hold visas in their passports or entry stamps from other countries and visa is valid for a one (1) month stay in the UAE. However, if you are going to stay longer, you have to contact the immigration officer at the airport or the local immigration office in the UAE and apply for the same.

Visa requirements for GCC nationals

The citizens of GCC countries i.e. the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, do not require a visa to visit the UAE.
The GCC residents who are not the national citizens but are working as high-level official such as doctors, managers, engineers or public sector employees along with their families can have a 30-day non-renewable visa at all the airports in the UAE upon arrival.

Visa requirements for other nationalities

Tourists from all the other nationalities must apply for a visa before they enter the country. They can do so through their respective embassy, a local UAE sponsor or even a local hotel in the UAE.

About Sponsors:

The travellers can get a Tourist Visa which is valid for 30 days, a Service Visa for 14 days or even a Visit Visa from a hotel or a travel company, but must first make a reservation. They must then transfer a copy of their passport and other documents to the hotel or travel agency along with their plan and arrival date. The hotel or the respective organisation will then fax you a visa copy when it is ready.
Other individuals, organisations who are based or residing in the UAE can apply on your behalf for a Visit Visa. Also, Work Visa can be obtained on your behalf from the employer or sponsor if you are planning to work in the UAE.
Airlines and airlines-handlers can apply for a 96-hour Transit Visa on behalf of their crew members.
Other UAE companies may apply only for Service Visa or a Visit Visa.

Types of Visas

Visit Visa

Tourists who wish to stay in the UAE for more than 14 days or those coming on family or business visits can apply for Visit Visas. These are valid for either 30 days (short term visit visa) or 90 days (long term visit visa). Both visas are non-renewable. Apart from the visa fees, a deposit is to be paid by the local sponsor/relative/resident which is reimbursed after the Visit Visa holder has left the country.
90-Day Long-Term Visit Visa for individuals is valid for 60 days from the issue date and non-renewable. Valid for 90 days from the arrival date and non-renewable
30-Day Short-Term Visit Visa for individuals is valid for 30 days from the issue date and non-renewable. Valid for 30 days from the arrival date and non-renewable

Tourist Visa

The Tourist Visa is a special category under the Visit Visa type and entitles the holder to a 30-day stay and in non-renewable. If visa holder of the Tourist Visa stays for more than 30 days, that person has to pay a fine per day plus some charges for an out pass.

Multiple-entry Visa

Multiple-entry Visas are issued to cruise ship passengers since their schedule entitles them to enter the country more than once in a single trip. Such visas are also issued to business visitors who are frequent visitors to the UAE due to their ties with a multinational company or a reputable local company. Multiple-entry Visas are valid for six months from the date of issue and the duration of each stay is 30 days. The visa is non-renewable. The individual must enter the UAE on a Visit Visa and then obtain a Multiple-entry Visa.

Transit Visa

Transit passengers stopping at the UAE airports for a minimum of 8 hours are eligible for a 96 hour Transit Visa. A valid onward ticket is required. Passport and other travel documents should be valid for at least three months.

Documents required (Individuals):

  • Clear passport copy of the sponsor
  • Clear passport copy of the sponsored person
  • A copy of the salary certificate or employment contract of the sponsor (resident) must be attached
  • Proof of family relationship (kinship)
  • Travel insurance
  • Copy of confirmed flight booking
  • Bank approval letter
  • Passport-sized colour photographs
  • Visa fee
  • Visa application form, duly filled

Rules and conditions:

  • Entry into the UAE is subject to immigration approval.
  • The ticket is non-refundable if the visa has been issued and utilised.
  • Visa processing time is approximately three to four working days.
  • Visa fees once paid are non-refundable.

The online visa application service is available for residents and nationals of many countries around the world: find out if you can apply for a UAE visa(Opens in a new window). Applicants' passports must have at least six months' validity as of their date of travel to Dubai, and must be machine readable passports – handwritten passports are not accepted.
This service is only available to passengers with a confirmed Emirates booking where an Emirates eticket has already been issued and the flight itinerary already includes the desired time in Dubai. The itinerary into and out of Dubai should be on one ticket, and these flights must be Emirates flights. Note that any itineraries including any flights to or from Dubai on other carriers are not eligible for the online visa service. 
A minimum of four international working days prior to arrival in Dubai is required, however Emirates does recommend that online applications are made as early as possible. Visas issued through this service are available for a period of stay in Dubai of 96 hours, 30 days or 90 days. Once approved, any visa cannot be extended beyond the original period of stay.

Other ways to apply

Dubai Immigration Procedures

As an added security measure, Immigration Authorities at Dubai International Airport are now conducting random eye screening for visitors to Dubai.
Visitors asked to proceed for eye screening are required to present a hard copy of their visa or a printed version of the visa number confirmation page at the screening counter. If you do not have a copy with you, a charge of AED 30 per copy applies - payable only in AED

- Fees applicable for the loss of Iqama/Muqeem (Saudi Arabia Identification Card) for the first time it is SR 1000/- for the second time it is SR 2000/- and for the third time is SR 3000/-

- According to the Arab News (Dated: 24-03-2014) If your iqama is stolen, Report it within 24 hours and avoid penalty.

- Firstly make sure you check all possible places to find your Muqeem or Iqama, If you still unable to find your Iqama then you should report it to your sponsor.
- Make a written note in Arabic, how you lost and where you lost. Then report it to the police with the help of your company person, who deals with your company iqama's or your company will arrange someone else. 

- Your sponsoring kafeel should arrange Arabic written note in your company logo letterhead signed by Chamber of Commerce and it should explain how you lost and where you lost. (Skip Chamber of Commerce sign, If you are employee in the public sector or government companies like Saudi Arabian Airlines, Saudi Aramco, SABIC in which countries own 50% of capital).
- If your Iqama period is one year or less, Then you should pay one year Iqama fee SR 650/-
- Specific person from your sponsor should visit Jawazat with Letter pad Arabic written Note, Two Photographs, Copy of Lost Iqama, Copy of Passport, Payment proof of Fine (SR 1000/-) and fee (SR 650/-) and Jawazat filled form. 

- If everything is fine, You will get a print of Iqama or Muqeem Card on the same day or next day.

 Sponsorship transfer is also known as Naqal Kafala in Saudi Arabia. Labor Ministry made it possible for employees to transfer their sponsorship legally without kafeel approval in Saudi Arabia. If the employees met any of the below conditions.

1. If your current company is in Red or Yellow Nitaqat categories of Sponsorship. Labor Ministry allows you to transfer your sponsorship to another company without informing your current sponsor. 2. Iqama Sponsorship Transfer, If you are a new employee in Saudi Arabia and your company or sponsor failed to provide Iqama or Muqeem card to you within 3 months, Then you can change your sponsorship legally with another company without current kafeel approval. 3. Being an employee of your current sponsor, If you did not receive salary from more than 3 months then you are free to join another company. 4. If you are new in Saudi Arabia as employee and your kafeel or sponsor is in Red or Yellow Category, Then you can transfer your sponsorship without kafeel approval, How ever you need to contact labor  in this situation. 

5. If your Iqama or Muqeem is expired before one month and your sponsor did not renew it, Then also you can transfer to new sponsor with the help of labor.

6. Most of the companies failed in Wage Protection System of Labor Ministry, Those companies employees can transfer their sponsorship to new companies.

IF LOST SAUDI IQAMA

Iqama Lost--If you have lost your iqama, getting a new one will be a little difficult. First try to find it in every possible place where it can be before applying for a new one. In case you can’t find it anywhere and you are sure that either it was stolen or lost then use the following procedure without delay.

Reporting an Iqama Lost

  • Report that your iqama was lost within 24 hours. As per new government law if you report within 24 hours of loosing your iqama you will not be penalized.
  • You will have to go to the police station and submit a written report in Arabic to the police stating that you have lost your iqama / muqeem card. To do this you will have to take someone from your company with you (ie. Sponsor or GRO).
  • The written report should be on your company’s letterhead and should explain how and where you lost your iqama.
  • Someone from your company will then have to visit Jawazat with two passport size photographs, copy of lost iqama, copy of passport, receipt of lost iqama payment fine and form.
  • If all goes in your favour, it usually takes a day for you to get your new iqama
  • Fine for lost iqama
    Losing it for the first time will end with you paying SR1000 as a fine, for the second time you will have to pay SR 2000 and for the third time SR3000.

According to the current low of Saudi Arabia, every expatriate have to subscribe for health insurance to get iqama. Iqama cannot be renewed if an expatriate does not have health insurance. It apply to both employees as well as their dependent. It is not a Matter of only subscribing for health insurance but this insurance should be updated in the system of Ministry of Interior. If an expatriate does not have health insurance or his health insurance is not updated in the MOI system, jawazat cannot issue his iqama. CHECK EXPARY OF HEALTH INSURANCE THROUGH MOI. However MOI requires iqama number to provide information about expiry ho health insurance. You can check the expiry of health insurance through MOI for an expatriate who already has iqama. But what about those employees who don’t have iqama ? In order check if someone has subscribed for insurance or if his insurance is updated in the system without iqama you need to follow the procedure.
First of all you open website of the council of cooperative heath insurance (CCHI) and select the English language there you need to click on the business owners tab from the slides. A page will open from where you will have to click on Inquire about insurance information tab give on the left hand side. As a shortcut you can click on this link to reach to this point. http://goo.gl/vn54N3. A new screen will appear in which you have to enter required information. If iqama has already been issued for an expatriate you need to enter iqama number in the field “Identity Number” If iqama is yet to be issued you need to inter Border number
